PRICHARD INTERMODAL FACILITY
The facility at Prichard will utilize its location in the United States, access to the regional Tri-State Airport and larger railway tunnels to become a hub of commercial transportation and product transition for the North-Atlantic region. Another aspect to the project currently in progress is the acquiring of about 50-60 acres of land near Kenova to create a distribution center for the material coming in the double-stacked containers from the intermodal facility. about 17 acres of land right next to I-64 as it enters Kenova, with about 17 more acres of land being leased to them by Norfolk Southern, in addition to 30 more acres Norfolk owns. The size could be approximately 1-1.5 million square feet and cost $22-$40 million. Having a facility close to the I-64, where shipments would go out on, is important to companies receiving these materials.

DOUBLE-STACKED FREIGHT – In January 2008 funding was put to use in southern West Virginia to begin widening and heightening railway tunnels to accommodate double-stacked freight cars, an example shown above, that would double load capacities and create significant savings for large companies. The work is expected to be completed by summer of 2010 with freight being transported at twice it’s previous rate.

These railroad tracks lead trains into Prichard and towards a proposed intermodal facility to be constructed in the Prichard area. The intermodal facility hopes to become a hub of commercial transportation and product transition for the North-Atlantic region.
